I used to make a list of things in my diary I was definitely NEVER going to repeat another year, but by next December it had all gone out of the window and the demands of others, not necessarily loved ones, pressured me into going through the whole nightmare again.

It’s different now. I’ve learned my lessons, but how many holidays I lost to strife and tension I can no longer recall.!Frikohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04277167831642088694noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7754684819908801536.post-59104473583881592992014-12-01T18:52:28.629-07:002014-12-01T18:52:28.629-07:00Surely this is a site well worth seeing.Surely this is a site well worth seeing.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16349087080262856079noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7754684819908801536.post-28346219406235698962014-12-01T11:14:37.081-07:002014-12-01T11:14:37.081-07:00Such wonderfully sensible advice, Kathy. Even in places where Thanksgiving is not celebrated (or celebrated on the 4th Thursday in November like ours is) —it can be a time for each of us to take time to thank God for our blessings and also not to forget the “Giving” in the word, ThanksGIVING. We all have lots of blessings —but many times, we ignore the giving part….Not just on Thanksgiving Day, but all of the time, please take time to contact family/friends just to say HI… And remember that a big SMILE can lift someone’s day…. Little things like that can really HELP..

Most of us NEED less stress in our lives --especially during the holidays... Thanks for sharing.

God Bless…
Happy Thanksgiving.
Hugs,
BetsyBetsy Banks Adamshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16223591156634767330noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7754684819908801536.post-64158287655852336552014-11-25T06:13:43.008-07:002014-11-25T06:13:43.008-07:00Your hints are always so on target, Kathy. We're doing the two-day TG route this year -- a quiet one I'm cooking for Rick and my dad's 90-year-old cousin. Traditional but simple (turkey breast v. the whole bird, fewer side dishes, she's bringing her favorite lime jello thing -- it's been years since lime jello for me!). Very no sweat. Rick is in charge of the family TG on Thursday, to accommodate in-laws and keeping the kids from having three dinners! Easy ham and veggies and potatoes. Breaking up the work makes the two-day event much easier.

There was an interesting article in the NYT Sunday about thinking like a hostage negotiator if maneuvering the challenging discussion terrain -- I hope we won't need it, but it's a good one and made a lot of sense in communicating less emotionally in tense situations.

I have a low-stress shopping idea! I recommend that people do what I did and order your book online! Saves shopping, stress and it's awfully good! (That was an unsolicited plug, but still, I'm so happy to sing its praises!)Jeaniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17482528482559445943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7754684819908801536.post-21768541119581244122014-11-24T19:52:43.412-07:002014-11-24T19:52:43.412-07:00Thank you! :)Thank you! :)Anitahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08180243708565855383noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7754684819908801536.post-79416084907713931162014-11-24T10:16:31.693-07:002014-11-24T10:16:31.693-07:00Well Dr. Kathy, you are talking to one who hates t...Well Dr. Kathy, you are talking to one who hates the entire holiday season. The fact that my entire family anticipates it with much alacrity doesn't help me at all. I dread everything about it.
All the advice in the world is lost on me. Yet, I appreciate how you broke down the issue and helped to make it manageable.

My copying mechanisms at the point in time, right after Thanksgiving, is to let my husband run the show, except for meal planning. So, he shops, wraps, decorates. He's happy; I'm minimizing the exposure to all that fuss and muss and commercial hoopla that is just there to help you spend money. I do search the paper for events I would enjoy attending, concerts, plays...

As I said, I aim to cope, and wish the damage is bearable. I am fortunate that the family squabbles are infrequent and never serious. However, I do put big demands on myself and am learning each year to take on a little less. This year it's another housefull for about 10 days! But I learned a long time ago how helpful it is to have as much prepared in advance as possible...

The Broadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04976467218216864644noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7754684819908801536.post-60146555774602161742014-11-24T07:18:39.045-07:002014-11-24T07:18:39.045-07:00Some great advice! I think I'm the last person on earth who says he actually enjoys going to the mall at Christmastime -- but for me a trip always includes a stop at the food court, and a 10-minute backrub at one of those massage chairs.Tomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08611148987085476580noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7754684819908801536.post-46007143064899505882014-11-22T20:09:21.250-07:002014-11-22T20:09:21.250-07:00Your much need post is right on time and so apprec...Your much need post is right on time and so appreciated. I always find comfort over here on your site. Great advice for enjoying the season. I think you have inspired me to cook a few things tomorrow and put them in the freezer. Gives me more time on Thursday.
Thank you for your sweet words about Christi. You know how I have stressed over her and Paul is such a Blessing. Wish you could see how happy she is now. It's truly been a Gift from God these two connecting again.
I have missed you very much. I tried coming by here a few times with my old computer but it just would not let me download much so this new computer is going to enable me to keep up with sweet dear friends like you more often.
I read your book Aging and Other Surprises. What a gift you have for making me feel better. While reading it I felt it was written for me. haha
Sending you much love and happiness for a very Happy Thanksgiving! You be careful on Black Friday. I have to hand it to you for shopping on that day I have never been that brave. haha
Love
MaggieGrandma Yellow Hairhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10917551672825097342noreply@blogger.com
